No holiday in Alicante can be done without making use of some form of transportation.  Even if you can walk to most of the places you want to visit, you may still need to take a train, a tram, or some other form of transportation to see some of the best sights in the area.  Here are a few different ways of getting around Alicante.

Walking is, of course, an option.  Many hotels are located within walking distance of some of the best restaurants, museums, tourist attractions, and shops.  If you have time to spend talking a walking tour of the city, it’s certainly a good way of enjoying an afternoon.  The temperature of Alicante is generally mild all year round, and it’s only really rainy in the fall, so you can enjoy the outdoors just about any time of the year.  The only trouble you may find is that you want to do too much shopping and can’t carry all of your purchases home!

The Alicante railway station can provide you with access to many areas of Alicante.  It is used by the cercanias, Spain’s commuter rail system.  It links Alicante with several different cities, including Murcia, San Vincente del Raspeig, Totana, Lorca, Aguilas, Orihuela, and Elche.  There are 26 different stations on the line.  In addition to running to these nearby locations, the railway station also features RENFE long-range trains to Barcelona and Madrid.

For getting to closer destinations, the Alicante Tram system connects the city with other, nearby towns and destinations on Costa Blanca.  It runs to Benidorm and to Denia, but that’s about as far as it goes.  It is useful for getting around Alicante itself, but for those looking to travel a bit farther, the tram may not reach all of your destinations.

If you want to visit some of the nearby Balearic Islands, the Island Tabarca, or visit Algeria, you will need to make use of one of the many ferries that regularly leave from the Alicante Harbour.  These ferries not only get you to your destination but they also provide a source of entertainment themselves as you get to enjoy the bright blue waters of the Mediterranean while in transit.
